Albatross History-1-1978. An ambition coming to fruition.
Albatross History-1-1978 – progressing towards an ambition – for the Reading Divers AND Central Pool!
In edit
Albatross History-1978 It was always my ambition to form a specialist diving club in Reading. Also Central Pool with its separate diving pool lent itself to this. Since 1966 (not 6 years as printed!) sharing the facility with Reading Swimming Club, and many sessions on poolside during public hours with the permission of the Baths Manager. Finally an inaugural committee was set up and Albatross Diving Club of Reading became affiliated to the Southern Counties Amateur Swimming Association and the sport of diving operated in the town in its own right . There were tremendous occasions during the planning of the club, and this included many adults divers taking to poolside and studying for their Teachers and Officiating Certificates.
I always said that the diving club would take on the name of “Albatross” after the diving team dived to the music of Albatross during the International Swimming Festival the previous year. It was so unusual in those days and was a delightful spectacle.
A musical display was a routine to continue at the opening of every Annual Gala until the present day 2017 – the 39th Gala – the last Albatross Event in the Central Pool, before the pools demise. In 2018 Albatross will celebrate it’s Ruby Anniversary. Sadly not at Central Pool.
